Greetings from Currie Kirk - 6th June 2025

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

‘It’s a great time to be Church!’ I came across that phrase recently in an article I was reading, and it has haunted me ever since. ‘It’s a great time to be Church.’ It was written, admittedly, in the United States – but even so, I thought, ‘What planet is this person on!’ Because I really don’t think that the Churches - or indeed the general situation in America looks much better than it does here in the UK. It seems to be a time of decline and disinterest across all the Western Churches ‘It’s a great time to be Church’ ‘Aye! Right!’ However, the writer was commentating on this passage in Matthew -

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; 38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9; 35 – 38)

We know all about the labourers being few, but sometimes we forget that the harvest is plentiful. As the world around us changes and so few people know about the Lord Jesus Christ and the Good News – the potential is indeed great. On the day of Pentecost, the followers of Jesus were few – but with the coming of God’s spirit, the Good News spread, far and wide. This Pentecost, as we celebrate that God’s Spirit is still active, dancing in our world, it is time to remember Jesus’ advice to his disciples - ‘Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers.’ Sometimes we are so caught up with how few labourers there are, that we forget to ask God for help.

Blessings!

Anne
