Weekly Letter 83 - 9th May 2025

Greetings from Currie Kirk - 9th May 2025

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

On our recent holiday we visited, amongst many other places, the island of Lombok. There we were privileged to go to a traditional village and as part of the tour, we watched a lady weaving cloth. It takes the women of the village about 4 weeks to weave a metre of cloth. The fabrics were very beautiful and many of them extremely complex in design. The fabric sells for thousands of Rupiah, but the very sad reality is that’s only a few pounds sterling. This Sunday sees the start of Christian Aid week. As well as donating money this week, I urge us all to consider the other ways we might help those poorest of our brothers and sisters. We might start by thinking about what we are wearing and continue by thinking about what we are eating and where it came from. Then, we need to give thought to what we are throwing out – the waste we create, especially when we waste food. Christian Aid have been amongst the most vocal advocates about the damage Climate Change is causing in the most vulnerable and deprived communities. So, they invite us to reflect this week on these words from the prophet Joel.

17 The seed shrivels under the clods; the storehouses are desolate; the granaries are ruined because the grain has withered.

18 How the animals groan! The herds of cattle wander about because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep are perishing.

19 To you, O Lord, I cry, for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flames have burned all the trees of the field.

20 Even the wild animals cry to you because the watercourses are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness. (Joel 1; 17 – 20)

Blessings! Anne
