Greetings from Currie Kirk - 3rd May 2024

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

After many weeks when it has seemed to rain in Lenzie on a Wednesday, we managed this week to take our young grand-daughter out with her scooter to visit one of her favourite haunts, the Helix park in Falkirk. Home to the wonderful Kelpies and a café with the necessary ‘cake,’ the Helix is a popular destination. We usually stop to say ‘Hello’ to the Unicorn - unicorns being important in the mind of our grand-daughter. However, this time we found other creatures too. An owl, and a centaur also made of wood and willow, are to be found near the Unicorn.

I admire the creativity and talent that produces Kelpies, unicorns and centaurs. There are so many aspects of human creativity around us to enjoy though, not just large public works of sculpture. We have our favourite authors, poets, musicians and artists, but all around us at local level we can find creative wonders. We find beautifully designed or tended gardens, unexpected architectural details in buildings we pass, well written letters or reports. We know people who are talented painters, musicians, bakers, sewers, knitters or wood workers. Some of the most unexpected people have hidden talents.

Exodus 35 reminds us that creative talents are God given and that in human creativity we can catch sight of God’s loving creativity. In the words of the much loved hymn ‘Almighty Father of all things that be’

‘Thou dost the strength to workman's arm impart;
from thee the skilled musician's mystic art,
the grace of poet's pen or painter's hand,
to teach the loveliness of sea and land.’

As we continue to travel through this Easter season, let us rejoice in the new life God brings to us through those he has blessed with creative skills.

Blessings! Anne
