Weekly Letter 18 - 26th January 2024

Greetings from Currie Kirk - 26th January 2024

A message from our Interim Moderator Rev Dr Anne Logan:

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 3; 16 – 18).

There is an assumption throughout the Bible that prayer, personal prayer will form part of our Christian lifestyle. Prayer also forms an important part of what we do when we worship together.

The prayers at a Sunday service fall into different categories. You will often find that the opening prayer in the Church of Scotland is a prayer of Adoration and Confession. Adoration is a prayer which names God and describes ways in which we believe God is worthy of our praise. Confession invites us to consider all the ways in which we, individually and as a community, have fallen short in our relationship with God and one another.

We commonly use offertory prayers which are also described as prayers of Dedication. In these prayers we acknowledge that our monetary offerings are only a symbol of what we offer to God, so, in these prayers, we dedicate not just our money but our whole lives to God.

Towards the end of the service, we usually have a prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession. Thanksgiving does what it says – gives thanks to God for all that God has done for us and Intercession is that part of prayer when we pray for other people.

Some worship leaders will use adventurous language; some will use careful imagery; others again will keep the language and images very simple. Often it takes as long (sometimes even longer) to write the prayers as it does to write the sermon. But, however the prayers are crafted, they are a vital part of our offering of worship and they invite us into a deeper relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessins!

Anne
